The sides finished in the top two positions of the league stage of the tournament. With 10 wins in 14 matches, Gujarat Titans took the top spot, while Chennai finished second with eight wins.
Whichever side wins the encounter will advance straight to the final. Gujarat are looking to win their second successive title in only their second year of competition, while Chennai are searching for their fifth IPL trophy – a feat achieved only by the Mumbai Indians – having most recently won the tournament in 2021.
The match will take place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, CSK’s home ground, and will start at 7:30 IST. The losing side will have another chance at qualification for the final in the second Qualifier, where they will face the winner of Eliminator, which will take place on Wednesday (May 24) between Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians. Qualifier Two will take place on Friday, May 26.
Gujarat beat Chennai in their only previous encounter in IPL 2023. The two sides contested the opening match of the tournament at the Narendra Modi Stadium, which Gujarat chased down 178 to win by five wickets.
The players to watch in today’s match include Shubman Gill, who has registered centuries in each of his two most recent IPL innings, as well as, of course, MS Dhoni at the helm of CSK. Focus will also be on Rashid Khan and Hardik Pandya of GT, and Devon Conway and Ravindra Jadeja of CSK.
