IPL 2023 final, CSK v GT: Preview and team news
Last season was just the second IPL season where Chennai played and did not qualify for the playoffs. They have bounced back brilliantly this year and are in their tenth (yes, tenth!) IPL final – despite not featuring in two of the 16 seasons.
The advantage, however, will be with Gujarat given they are playing at their home ground. The Ahmedabad surface has been sublime for batting this year. Chennai’s trademark strategy of attacking with their spinners might need a rethink on this ground.
Mohammed Shami’s new-ball spell will play a big hand in deciding which way the game goes. This year, he has already taken 17 wickets in the powerplay – the most by any bowler in a single season of the IPL.
That makes the role of Chennai’s top three extremely important. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway have provided unmatched levels of consistency, while Ajinkya Rahane has been brilliant against pace.
On the other hand, as far as Gujarat’s batting is concerned, Shubman Gill will hold the key. Chennai will believe that if they can get him cheaply, the rest of the Gujarat batting order should follow. Like Shami, all eyes will be on Chennai’s new-ball attack as well, especially Deepak Chahar.
