A total of 27 England players will go under the hammer for the 2023 IPL auction, which will take place on December 23. Among the usual suspects are some surprise contenders hoping to play in the franchise tournament next year.
Seven players are already confirmed to be taking part in the competition, with Moeen Ali, Mark Wood, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Jos Buttler and David Willey all retained by their respective franchises.
Chris Jordan, Jason Roy, and Tymal Mills were all released by their franchises ahead of this year’s auction, and will throw their hats into the ring once more. Alex Hales was released by Kolkata Knight Riders after the 2022 season, he confirmed that he would sit out the 2023 tournament to focus on his international commitments after his return to the T20I side and role in England’s T20 World Cup victory.
Sam Billings has also announced he will not take any part in the 2023 tournament in order to focus on the long format of the game, he was picked up for 2 crore by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022.
Among the most high profile England names who will be part of this years auction is Joe Root who, despite playing 32 T20Is for his country including the 2016 T20 World Cup final, went unsold the last time he entered the IPL auction in 2018. Root has not played a T20I since 2019 but features for Yorkshire Vikings in the T20 Blast as well as the Trent Rockets in the Hundred.
Ben Stokes will also re-enter the auction after he was released from a £1.3 million contract with Rajasthan Royals for the 2022 tournament in order to focus on his mental health and well being. After his promotion to the Test captaincy which has seen the England team embark on an incredible run of victories, his international calendar looks busier than ever with a Test tour to New Zealand scheduled for February, shortly before the IPL tournament starts, and a one-off Test against Ireland starting four days after the competition’s conclusion, all before a home Ashes series.
Harry Brook has also put himself forward for the auction after a successful start to his international career in both the longest and shortest format of the game, and 18-year-old Rehan Ahmed will also be in the mix following a break-through year in domestic cricket and call-up to the Test squad.
Other players who were part of the victorious T20 World Cup side include player-of-the-tournament Sam Curran, Phil Salt, Adil Rashid and Dawid Malan. Those with other international caps on the list include Tom Banton, Will Jacks, Tom Curran, George Garton, Jamie Overton, Craig Overton, Richard Gleeson, David Payne and Luke Wood.
Another player of interest in the auction will be Will Smeed, who made headlines by signing a white-ball only contract with Somerset at the age of 21 before playing a single first-class match. The others on the list are all uncapped at international level and include Jordan Thompson, Chris Benjamin, Tom Helm, James Fuller and Benny Howell.
