Several key players have been ruled out of the 2023 Indian Premier League already – enough to make an IPL 2023 injured cricketers’ XI.
There is less than a week to go before the start of the IPL season, several franchises are set to miss at least one of their players through injury. While some teams have named substitutes, others have not – yet.
This XI does not include injured cricketers like Josh Hazlewood and Nitish Rana, of whose availability for the tournament there is no official update.
Will Jacks (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
After making waves in Twenty20 cricket – he strikes at 158 in the format and bowls useful off-breaks to boot – Jacks was one of the top purchases for RCB at the auction, going for INR 3.2 crore. However, he picked up an injury on England’s recent tour of Bangladesh and has been ruled out of IPL 2023. He has been replaced in the squad by Michael Bracewell.
Jonny Bairstow (Punjab Kings)
A key part of England’s summer of 2022 and a crucial member of their limited-overs sides, Bairstow had a “freak accident whilst playing golf” last September and has not played competitive cricket since then. He will not be part of this IPL season either: Punjab have replaced him with Matthew Short, Player of the Tournament at the 2022/23 BBL.
Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
A heel injury has put Patidar out of the first half of the 2023 IPL. He will return for the second half if and only if, following three weeks of rest an MRI scan turns out to be favourable. Patidar first came into limelight as a mid-season replacement himself, for Luvnith Sisodia, in IPL 2022, and finished the tournament with 333 runs at a strike rate of 153.
Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders)
A back injury kept Iyer out of the first Test match against Australia. He returned for the next three, only to be ruled out of the ODI series that followed. He has been advised to undergo surgery, and will miss at least the first half of this season’s IPL. Kolkata are yet to name a replacement captain.
Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals)
Like Kolkata, Delhi will miss their captain as well – in this case, for the entire season. Unlike Kolkata, however, they have appointed David Warner at the helm. A car crash has put Pant out of action for at least the entire duration of the IPL – and well beyond.
Kylie Jamieson (Chennai Super Kings)
Chennai acquired Jamieson for INR 1 crore at this season’s auction. However, he has sustained a stress fracture in his back which will require surgery. It has also put him out of action for the next few months. Chennai have roped in Sisanda Magala, a fast bowler of equal proficiency in both the powerplay and at the death.
Jasprit Bumrah (Mumbai Indians)
When Mumbai signed up Jofra Archer at the 2022 auction, expectations of the cricket fraternity soared around the devastating partnership he could form with Bumrah. But Archer missed the 2022 edition, and while he is now back, Bumrah is set to miss this season’s IPL as he continues his long injury lay-off.
Jhye Richardson (Mumbai Indians)
Bumrah is not the only fast bowler Mumbai are going to miss this season. Richardson underwent shoulder surgery in 2019 that had kept him out of action for some time and earlier this month he also had to undergo a hamstring surgery. He will be out of action for the IPL and perhaps beyond.
Mukesh Choudhary (Chennai Super Kings)
Left-arm seamers are a rarity in contemporary Indian cricket, but Choudhary brought hope to Indian fans in 2022 when his 16 wickets at 26.50 apiece were among the rare highs for Chennai. However, a back injury forced him to undergo rehabilitation at the NCA. While there has been no official news, Chennai CEO Kasi Viswanathan admitted “we are waiting on Mukesh but we do not have much hope.”
Mohsin Khan (Lucknow Super Giants)
Yet another uncapped left-arm seamer, Mohsin finished as the second-most economical bowler (after Sunil Narine) at IPL 2022. In the same year, he underwent surgery to remove blood clots in his left shoulder, and has not played high-level cricket since then. He has been batting in the nets, but bowling is likely to take some time.
Prasidh Krishna (Rajasthan Royals)
Prasidh’s excellent ODI career (25 wickets at 23.92) was halted by a lumbar stress fracture that has kept him out of action since August 2022. He will not be playing cricket for at least the entirety of the 2023 IPL. Rajasthan will sorely miss him, for he had finished as their second-highest wicket taker last season, behind only Purple Cap winner Yuzvendra Chahal.
