Every Indian Premier League season marks the start of some famous IPL careers, and there are several newbies looking to make a mark in 2023.
Sometimes, these are bolts from the blue, announcing themselves on the biggest stage franchise cricket has to offer. Others are already established stars, with IPL success one of the last boxes left to check on their way to greatness. There are several teams in the IPL betting on new players to helm their campaigns.
Here are some of the names who will look to be making an impact for their teams in their debut seasons in 2023.
Five IPL newbies looking to make a mark in 2023
Harry Brook – Sunrisers Hyderabad
There’s no better place to start than Brook who has burst onto the international scene. Burst is an understatement, in fact – Brook is the first player to score 800 runs in their first nine Test innings. While traditionally Test match form would be hard to equate to IPL form, Brook has a strike rate of 99 in the longest format and encapsulates Bazball in all its aggression and positivity.
Brook has T20 form too: He has 2,432 runs in the format and forced his way into the eventual world champions England’s T20 World Cup squad after a series in Pakistan in which he scored 231 runs at an average of 79.33 and a strike rate of 163.01.
Sunrisers Hyderabad invested a lot of money into Brook, making him the most expensive overseas specialist bat bought at the auction, so it would not be a surprise to see him in the middle order alongside the new captain Aiden Markram.
Cameron Green – Mumbai Indians
Green’s move to the Mumbai Indians is based on a small sample size but a huge amount of potential. There was a lot of pre-auction hype after he enjoyed a good time in Australian colours in India. He opened the batting in the format so maybe Rohit Sharma will move himsedown the order to facilitate a Green and Ishan Kishan opening partnership.
His T20I strike rate of 173.75 will give his new franchise hope he can explode this year. The one question will be which phase would best utilise his bowling skills but he has bounce and pace which means he has the raw materials to be a great bowler in all formats.
Will Jacks – Royal Challengers Bangalore
Jacks was The Hundred’s second century-maker and enjoyed a brilliant summer in all formats. The SA20 proved that he could do it against IPL-level bowlers, smashing it for the Pretoria Capitals. Despite his tournament being cut short, he still scored 270 runs at a strike rate of over 200.
Initially, he may have been picked by RCB as a replacement player for Glenn Maxwell with his ability to bowl but with the form he has shown, Royal Challengers Bangalore may look to fit him into their starting XI.
Josh Little – Gujarat Titans
Little is the first Irish player to get an IPL deal and there is no surprise with his pace and left-arm angle. If he is given an opportunity by the IPL champions then he could be a difference-maker for them. The one concern will be a possible injury which is currently keeping him out of the Pakistan Super League.
He has 107 T20 wickets in just 85 matches and has Hundred experience with Manchester Originals so he should be IPL-ready.
Reece Topley – Royal Challengers Bangalore
Another English player at the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who like Jacks may have been picked as a back-up for an Australian – Josh Hazelwood in Topley’s case. But with his injury concerns plaguing him enough to keep him out of the ODI series against India, Topley might get an opportunity.
The Topley story is one of constantly overcoming injury struggles but when he is fit he has a brilliant wicket-taking ability and adds a left-arm seamer to the strong RCB pace attack.
