A total of fourteen England players have made it into the various squads for IPL 2023 – with a busy summer ahead, we look at how each of them is faring in the competition.
Three weeks in, at least one player from the English contingent is already ruled out, while a few others continue to deal with injuries. On the other side, there are also a select few who are yet to start the season. It’s not all bleak though – the list also contains the first centurion of the season and the current Purple Cap holder.
Stats mentioned are till the Lucknow Super Giants – Rajasthan Royals game (April 19).
Jos Buttler
The explosion continues. Last year’s Orange Cap winner, Butter is currently in the top 10 run-getters in IPL 2023 too. Three fifties in five innings – all in wins – have played a key role in Rajasthan Royals’ charge to the top of the points table. They are the current favourites in the IPL betting. The strike rate so far – 163.20 – is much higher than his overall number. A three-ball duck, against Gujarat Titans has been the only blip so far, but it was also his first duck in the IPL in seven years.
Sam Curran
The most expensive player in IPL auction history – the price tag naturally brings along great expectations. So far, Curran’s been okay without being spectacular. With the ball, he’s been doing his part – after two wicket-less spells, he now has four wickets in two games, and also bowled a fine 20th over while defending 16 against LSG. With the bat, he’s been underwhelming, striking at 124 with no score above 26. You just get a sense though, that he’s just warming up for something big.
Mark Wood
After a couple of false starts, Wood has finally arrived in the IPL. Cranking up the pace the way only he can, Wood began with a bang, picking up a five-for – the tournament’s best figures (5-14) so far – and is the joint-holder of the Purple Cap (11 wickets) at the moment.
Harry Brook
It was one of the most anticipated debuts, but when Brook failed to make anything substantial in his first three IPL innings, the knives were quickly pulled out. Brook responded in the best way possible, striking the season’s first century – a 55-ball ton that shut all doubters. Later, he said he was happy to silence all the Indian fans who were “slagging him off”.
Ben Stokes
Probably the biggest setback to Chennai Super Kings’ campaign so far. Stokes played two games, with little contribution of note, and was sidelined thereafter due to a heel injury. A return seems likely since he was seen bowling in the nets ahead of the previous game.
Moeen Ali
With the ball, Moeen has been economical and tight in the middle overs, beginning with a four-wicket haul against LSG. With the bat, he has been floated around the order between No.3 and 7, but a big score is yet to come.
Adil Rashid
Just the two games for Rashid so far, one included a wicketless spell, and the other a tidy two-wicket haul, both in big losses. SRH have since bolstered their batting with an additional overseas option, and brought in Indian spinner Mayank Markande instead.
David Willey
It’s not easy being a bowler in RCB, especially when you play half your games at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Willey’s role has been limited. Against KKR, his spell of 4-0-16-2 was exactly what RCB needed, but he’s played only one more game since. Reece Topley’s injury could have freed up a spot, but Wayne Parnell’s entry and Wanindu Hasaranga’s return have made it difficult for him to get a place.
Jofra Archer
When it was announced that Jasprit Bumrah wouldn’t feature this season, Mumbai fans still had Jofra Archer to pin their hopes on. Just one game later (0-33), Archer was sidelined yet again, due to another niggle in the right elbow that has harrowed him for long. With a busy summer ahead, it’s unlikely that he’ll rush back in.
Reece Topley
Misfortune continues to haunt Topley. A freak shoulder injury – sustained while diving inside the circle – ended his IPL season after just two overs in the RCB kit.
Liam Livingstone
It’s a question most Punjab Kings fans are asking: where is Livingstone? After a breakthrough 2022 season, Livingstone has been sitting on the sidelines, arriving late and then pulling a muscle in practice. He’s likely to make an appearance soon though.
Phil Salt
With David Warner at the top, and the wicketkeeping spot already taken up, there’s been no space for Salt in the Delhi Capitals XI yet.
Jason Roy
Brought in as a replacement for Shakib Al Hasan, Roy is still waiting for his first game at KKR this season.
Joe Root
With Buttler and Shimron Hetmyer locked in, there’s barely any overseas batting space available. The last two spots have been divided between Adam Zampa, Jason Holder and Trent Boult.
