Watch: Suresh Raina’s triumphant Chennai Super Kings return came to an unusual end, with the former India batsman run out following a collision between Ravindra Jadeja, his batting partner, and Delhi Capitals bowler Avesh Khan.
Raina, playing his first Indian Premier League game since 2019, had looked in superb touch, blitzing a 32-ball half-century. However, he couldn’t carry on much past his landmark, despite doing little wrong to get himself dismissed.
His wicket fell on the first ball of the 16th over, with Jadeja clipping Avesh through square leg and pushing hard for a second. However, he ran into the bowler on attempting his return to the striker’s end, and immediately turned on his heels and returned for the safety of the crease, leaving Raina stranded.
The run might well have been a tight one in any case, with Jadeja running to the danger end, and there is little suggestion Avesh did anything wrong, walking backwards slowly without ever looking at Jadeja. However, Raina can still consider himself unlucky. CSK fans will be hoping he uses the moment to spur him on in his future knocks.
