Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock had put on 58 runs in the powerplay overs for Mumbai, something Player of the Match Kieron Pollard identified as a crucial base for him to take off in a tall run-chase.
It wouldn’t have been possible had Rohit not taken a risky review in the third over of the innings. Deepak Chahar had Rohit trapped in front with the umpire raising his fingers after a strong appeal from Chennai Super Kings. Rohit’s expression showed he wasn’t sure about the review, but eventually after consulting with de Kock, took it anyway only to find that he had actually nicked it, with the replays catching the players and commentators by surprise.
“Oh wow, tell you what, didn’t hear anything up here. Ananthapadmanabhan didn’t hear anything. Rohit Sharma didn’t hear anything. Quinton de Kock didn’t hear anything either, because if they had, if he knew he hit it, he’d have gone up straightaway, not gone for some discussion with his partner at the other end,” the commentator quipped on air with his colleague quickly backing him up.
“He definitely wasn’t confident, Rohit, when he took that review. And the reason I believe he went for the review was maybe thinking it was missing leg or too high, but not bat. It seemed like that.”
The review proved to be crucial as the two openers set the platform for Pollard to snatch the game away from CSK in the second highest successful run-chase in IPL history.
