The IPL retentions and releases were announced on Wednesday and the franchises have a bigger purse and lesser players as they head to the IPL 2021 auction.

Chennai Super Kings

Salary cap available: Rs 22.90 crore

Chennai Super Kings released six players, notably Shane Watson (retired), Kedar Jadhav and Harbhajan Singh to give themselves a decent budget heading into the IPL 2021 auction. Chennai finished seventh last season and we’re expected to make more releases, but in the end retained the core of their line-up.

Delhi Capitals

Salary cap available: Rs 12.90 crore

Delhi Capitals have had a very settled outfit for the past couple of seasons and did not have to make any major releases among the Indian contingent ahead of the IPL 2021 auction. However, they left out four overseas players to clear up some budget and open themselves up to more options at the auction table next month.

Kings XI Punjab

Salary cap available: Rs 53.20 crore

KXIP have the largest purse heading into the IPL 2021 auction, having let go of two of their biggest buys – Glenn Maxwell (Rs 10.75 crore) and Sheldon Cottrell (Rs 8.5 crore). Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Krishnappa Gowtham and Karun Nair were also released. They did, however, retain their head coach, the first time that has happened in the last five seasons.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Salary cap available: Rs 10.75 crore

Amidst the chaos, Kolkata Knight Riders held onto Dinesh Karthik and Kuldeep Yadav, two players they were expected to release before the IPL 2021 auction. Tom Banton and Chris Green, who weren’t a regular feature in the starting XI last season, were two of the five players to be released. Their available budget is the joint-lowest for any franchise and they will need to make smart decisions at the auction table to make up for the lack of funds.

Mumbai Indians

Salary cap available: Rs 15.35 crore

The five-time title winners had some major announcements to make in the IPL retentions as they had to leave out Lasith Malinga, who has retired from franchise cricket. Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Pattinson, Mitchell McClenaghan and Sherfane Rutherford were also in the list of released players, leaving Mumbai Indians with four overseas slots to fill in the IPL 2021 auction.

Rajasthan Royals

Salary cap available: Rs 34.85 crore

Rajasthan Royals released their skipper Steve Smith and appointed franchise loyal, Sanju Samson as their new captain for the 2021 edition of the tournament. They also freed up some overseas slots with the release of Tom Curran and Oshane Thomas. This has left Rajasthan Royals with a good salary cap of Rs 34.85 crore for the IPL 2021 auction.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Salary cap available: Rs 35.90 crore

Royal Challengers Bangalore retained just 12 players ahead of the IPL 2021 auction, and have opened themselves up to a plethora of options at the auction table. The franchise let go off key overseas personnel in Chris Morris, Moeen Ali and Aaron Finch and have a budget of Rs 35.9 crore, the second-most for any team. They will be on the lookout for some superstars this IPL auction.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Salary cap available: Rs 10.75 crore

Sunrisers Hyderabad stuck to the core group of players that have yielded them success over the last few seasons and released just six players. Billy Stanlake and Fabian Allen are the only two overseas players released. The franchise will have a budget of Rs 10.75 crore, the joint-lowest, as they go into the IPL 2021 auction.
