We’ve taken a look at how England’s representatives at the tournament have been getting along:
Eoin Morgan – Kolkata Knight Riders
Morgan’s tally of 38 runs from three innings has meant he’s not really got going with the bat in the tournament as captain of KKR. His side began the tournament with a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad but collapsed horribly against Mumbai Indians and were thoroughly outclassed by RCB in their most recent fixture.
Jos Buttler – Rajasthan Royals
Buttler has showed signs of a return to form after a tough time of it with England in their ODIs against India, beginning his season in the middle order with a 13-ball 25 against Punjab and most recently hitting a quickfire 49 up top against CSK. With Ben Stokes ruled out of the rest of the tournament, the onus is on Buttler to get the Royals off to a flier as their gun overseas opener.
Ben Stokes – Rajasthan Royals
Stokes’ tournament came to an end quickly – he broke a finger taking a catch in his side’s first game and was subsequently ruled out of the opening stages of England’s international summer.
Sam Curran – Chennai Super Kings
Having been one of CSK’s best players in 2020, Curran has maintained his status as a key performer this year too. He began the season with a couple of big hits off his elder brother and played a fine all-round role in his side’s most recent victory, cracking 13 off six deliveries before taking 2-24 with the ball against Rajasthan.
Moeen Ali – Chennai Super Kings
After plenty of time on the sidelines over the winter with England and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Moeen has finally been granted some game time and impressed as well, topping his side’s run-charts so far with 108 runs from three games at a healthy strike rate of 144. Add in figures of 3-7 in a win over the Royals and the picture grows rosier.
Chris Woakes – Delhi Capitals
Before the start of the tournament, Woakes hadn’t played a T20 game since 2018, but he’s showed little rustiness upon his return to the format. In three matches, Woakes has taken five wickets at an average of 16.40, with international colleagues Buttler and Sam Curran among his victims.
Jonny Bairstow – Sunrisers Hyderabad
Despite his franchise’s struggles – Sunrisers sit at the bottom of the league table after losing all three of their games so far – Bairstow’s returns have been a plus. He began the tournament with a half-century and was particularly aggressive at the top of the order in his side’s most recent fixture against Mumbai Indians, striking 43 off just 22 balls before his teammates faltered.
Tom Curran – Delhi Capitals
Thanks to the delayed arrivals of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, Curran was given a go in Delhi’s first two games but was expensive in both and had to endure the misery of Chris Morris striking a match-winning six off his final ball against Rajasthan.
Yet to play: Dawid Malan, Sam Billings, Chris Jordan, Jason Roy, Jofra Archer (yet to join the tournament)
Liam Livingstone has returned home after being part of the Rajasthan Royals squad.
