Here’s the average age of all eight teams for IPL 2021 (Squads referenced from official franchise sites. Numbers accurate as of March 30, 2021):
Average age of all eight IPL 2021 squads
Rajasthan Royals (RR) – 25.41
The youngest squad at IPL 2021 is Rajasthan Royals. That’s not a big surprise, considering they’ve always been known to select and promote young talent. Andrew Tye, at 34, is the oldest player in the squad while Akash Singh at 18 is the youngest player in the tournament this year.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) – 26.88
Punjab Kings have the second-youngest squad in this edition of the Indian Premier League. At the same time, however, they also have the second-oldest player of the tournament in their ranks – Chris Gayle (41). While they have a bunch of veterans in the squad, 14 of Punjab’s 25 squad members are 25 or younger.
Mumbai Indians (MI) – 27.72
Defending champions Mumbai are the next in line. While they have few of India’s most experienced international stars in the squad, they also boast of talented youngsters like Ishan Kishan, Anukul Roy and Rahul Chahar. Marco Jansen is the youngest player in the squad while Arjun, the son of Sachin Tendulkar, is the youngest Indian in the Mumbai squad player at 20. Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Aditya Tare and Nathan Coulter-Nile, all 33, are the oldest.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) – 28.08
While 12 of Hyderabad’s 25 squad players are 30 or above. Their three youngest players are Abdul Samad (19), Afghanistan wrist-spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman (19) and Rashid Khan (20), while the oldest is their compatriot Mohammad Nabi.
Delhi Capitals (DC) – 28.16
Despite being perceived as a relatively young side due to the spate of talented youngsters at their disposal, the Delhi Capitals squad is one of the older ones in IPL 2021. While their regular skipper is the young and dynamic Shreyas Iyer, they also have veterans like R Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith in the mix.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) – 28.18
Royal Challengers Bangalore have nine players in the 25 to 29 age group and as many in the 30 and above category. Their youngest player, Devdutt Padikkal, is 20. Dan Christian, at 37, is the oldest, followed by directly by three 32-year-olds: Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Sachin Baby.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – 28.64
With youngsters like Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi a part of their squad, KKR being second-last in the list might seem absurd. However, with eight players above the age of 31, Kolkata Knight Riders become the second-oldest squad in the league. Their oldest cricketer is Harbhajan Singh, who continues to go strong at 40.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) – 30.08
Don’t think this surprises anyone. The only squad to average over 30 in IPL 2021 is Chennai Super Kings. Out of their 25 squad members, 13 are aged 30 or more. They also have the oldest player in the league in their ranks – Imran Tahir (42).
