On the latest episode of the Wisden Cricket Weekly podcast, the panel discussed Chris Jordan‘s IPL 2020 performances so far.
Representing the Kings XI Punjab, Jordan has featured in four matches, picking up just one wicket while leaking runs at 9.63 an over, with his reputation as one of the top T20 death bowlers taking a beating. But whether that will directly affect his spot in the England T20I side remains to be seen.
Jo Harman, the Wisden Cricket Monthly magazine editor, believes Jordan’s IPL performances will have little say when England play their next T20I match, while Ben Gardner, Wisden.com‘s managing editor, credited Eoin Morgan for getting the best out of Jordan for England.
BG: Is it possible for a player to play themselves out of the England team in the IPL?
JH: I think it depends on how badly you go and Jordan has had a tough time. Morgan really, really trusts Jordan though and he hasn’t really let England down in T20 international cricket. He is Morgan’s go-to man at the death. Someone was tweeting about the best death bowlers in the world and Morgan chipped in with, ‘What, no Chris Jordan?’ Which is kind of unlike Morgan as he doesn’t get involved on Twitter all that much. He really, really rates Chris Jordan as a bowler.
I think that come England’s first T20 international [after the IPL], Jordan will still be there. The question is whether he can reverse his IPL form and suddenly start bowling brilliantly again for England, which is what he has done in the past, but it’s a tough thing to keep asking him to do. England’s fast-bowling options are OK, it’s not like people are banging down the door the same way as it is with batsmen, so Jordan has that counting in his favour as well.

BG: I suppose there are a lot of bowlers who bowl better under Eoin Morgan than anyone else. That is the thing with Jordan that he [Morgan] is the right captain.
