Chennai Super Kings succumbed to their eighth defeat in IPL 2020 on Friday, which virtually ended their chances of qualifying for the playoffs. If they fail to qualify, it will be the first time that they’d fall outside the top four in their IPL history.
The ten-wicket defeat against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians mustn’t have been easy to take. They were reduced to 3-4 and then to 30-6, before a rescue act by Sam Curran took them to 114-9 by the end of the 20th over. The fact that they managed to survive all 20 overs was a small win in itself.
Expectedly, the memes were out in full force.

0-1, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4 – CSK’s scores after each of their first four wickets fell. Can’t blame those who mistook it for a football score!

When MS Dhoni departed with the scorecard reading 30-6, many CSK fans would have feared that the dubious record for the lowest IPL score – held by RCB (49 against KKR, 2017) – would be broken.
If MI captain Kieron Pollard had continued with Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah after their initial spells, CSK, perhaps, could have come close to breaking the record.

The IPL title count is currently at MI-4, CSK-3 – who knows if Rohit & Co. might go on to win their fifth this time.

Sam Curran was the lone warrior for CSK, walking in at 21-5 and finishing with a 47-ball-52 to take CSK past 100. The England all-rounder has also been one of the very few positives in a largely forgettable season for CSK.
