The BCCI on Sunday said that it’s too early to arrive at a decision on whether the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL) can go ahead, after the government eased the restrictions on sporting events, according to a report on ESPNcricinfo.
India’s Ministry of Home Affairs declared that sports stadiums can now be opened but that spectators will not be permitted, which means that the IPL, if it does take place, will have to go ahead behind closed doors.
But with travel restrictions still in place, both within the country and from abroad, hosting a tournament in the current scenario is still not a likely occurrence. “Taking into the account the restrictions on air travel and movement of people till May 31, the BCCI will wait further before organising a skill-based training camp for its contracted players,” Arun Dhumal, the BCCI treasurer, said.

“The board reiterates that the safety and well-being of its athletes and support staff is paramount and will not rush into any decision that can hamper or jeopardise India’s efforts in containing the spread of the virus.”
In addition to a travel allowance that will facilitate both the organising of the tournament, as well as the participation of overseas players, Dhumal said a window will have to be worked out, with a majority of the traditional window having now lapsed.
“The BCCI will study guidelines at the state level,” Dhumal said, “and will work in sync with state cricket associations to chalk out a programme for skill-based training at a local level.”
