Heather Knight has accused Deepti Sharma of ‘lying’ after the latter claimed the India team had warned Charlie Dean before running her out at the non-striker’s end during the third ODI between the two sides.
England captain Knight, who did not take part in the entire white-ball series due to a hip injury, has rubbished Deepti’s statement, accusing India of “lying” about giving Dean a warning.
“The game is over, Charlie was dismissed legitimately,” tweeted Knight. “India were deserved winners of the match and the series. But no warnings were given. They don’t need to be given, so it hasn’t made the dismissal any less legitimate.
“But if they’re comfortable with the decision to affect the run out, India shouldn’t feel the need to justify it by lying about warnings.”

Dean’s dismissal has been under scrutiny ever since Deepti ran her out at the non-striker’s end on Saturday, the wicket bringing an end to India’s tour of England. India were bowled out for 169 in the first innings. England, looking to avoid a series whitewash, were reduced to 118-9, but the last pair of Freya Davies and Dean added 35 for the last wicket as the game headed towards an exciting ending.
The game had an anticlimactic finish when Dean was run out at the non-striker’s end, when Sharma whipped off the bails upon spotting her out of the crease before she could deliver the ball. As Dean broke into tears, the Indian team were at the receiving end of backlash despite the MCC clarifying that the match “had been properly officiated.”
Upon arriving in India, Deepti claimed that Dean had been warned by the Indian team for not backing up. “Woh plan tha hum logon ka … baar baar hum warn bhi kar chuke the usko. Jo rules mein hain, jo guidelines hain, uske according hi humne kiya.
“Umpires ko bola tha hum logon ne, but still woh wahin par thi. Hum log kuchh nahin kar sakte the.”
(“We did inform the umpires, but she continued to do it. We were left with little alternative. We had planned this, [but] we had warned her several times. We acted according to the rules and the guidelines.”)
