Smriti Mandhana scored her fourth ODI century of 2024 today (December 11), in India's defeat to Australia at the WACA. In doing so, she set an all-time record for the most centuries scored in a calendar year in women's ODIs.
Mandhana's innings came after India were set 299 to win by Australia. Annabel Sutherland scored 110 off 99 balls in Australia's innings, with both Ash Gardner and Tahlia McGrath also contributing half-centuries. Faced with a tough chase, Mandhana lost opening partner, Richa Ghosh, early in the innings, after she was bowled by a delivery from Megan Schutt which beat her for length.
However, Mandhana became the only standout in a disastrous performance from India's batting unit. She stayed at the crease after Harleen Deol was dismissed by Alana King for 39, and as the wickets fell processionaly after that. Harmanpreet Kaur was dismissed for a 22-ball 12 before Jemimah Rodrigues was out for 16. Deepti Sharma, Minnu Mani and Saima Thakor then all fell for single-figure scores.
Mandhana reached her 50 off as many balls in the 14th over of the innings when things were looking brighter for India, their run-rate over five an over with only one wicket down. She reached her century at the beginning of the collapse, however, tucking a ball from King to short fine leg to reach the landmark off 103 balls. She was out less than two overs later, however, falling for 105.
End of a remarkable knock from the #TeamIndia Vice-captain 👏👏

That century was Mandhana's fourth of 2024, having scored two back-to-back against South Africa in June, before scoring exactly 100 against New Zealand in October. No one has ever scored as many centuries as Mandhana in a single calendar year in women's ODIs, with seven other players having scored three.
The hundred also moved Mandhana up another rung on the all-time century list in women's ODIs, bringing her total to nine and drawing her level with Nat Sciver-Brunt, Chamari Athapaththu and Charlotte Edwards in joint-fourth place. Next in her sights is Tammy Beaumont, who has 10 ODI centuries to her name at the time of writing before the third ODI between England and South Africa.
