Yashasvi Jaiswal celebrates half century against New Zealand

Yashasvi Jaiswal broke Gundappa Vishwanath’s longstanding record for scoring most runs at home in a calendar by an India player. The India opener achieved the feat during India’s second Test match against New Zealand in Pune on Saturday (October 26).

Vishwanath initially held the record for scoring 1,047 runs at an average of 61.58 with four centuries and three half-centuries in 1979. Jaiswal has amassed 1,056 runs at an average of 66.00 with two hundreds and seven fifties this year so far. He can add to the tally as the third Test match against New Zealand, and a series in Australia awaits later in the year. Jaiswal joined Michael Clarke, Mohammad Yousef, Graham Gooch, Sunil Gavaskar and Justin Langer, along with Vishwanat, as players with over 1,000 Test runs at home in a calendar year.

Jaiswal is also one hit away from equalling Brendon McCullum’s record (33) for smashing the most number of sixes in Tests in a calendar year. The 22-year-old has had a spectacular start to his Test career since making his debut in July 2023 in the West Indies. He scored 1,372 runs in 13 innings at a staggering average of 59.65 and a strike rate of 70.79 with three hundred, eight fifties and a best of 214*.

In the first Test against New Zealand, it was hard work for the India batters on a tough wicket at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Jaiswal was not exempt from the unforgiving nature of the surface, as he could not clear the boundary during his two innings. After scoring 13 and 35 in the first Test, he scored 30 in the first innings at Pune.

In the second innings, he made up for the slump with a quickfire 77 off 65 balls with nine fours and three sixes to get India off to a flyer, chasing a challenging target of 359. However, India slumped to 245 all out, and conceded their first Test series defeat at home since 2012.
