Watch: Sarfaraz Khan played a lead role in handing India their second wicket on the first morning of the India-New Zealand Test in Pune, convincing captain Rohit Sharma to take a successful review.
New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat first in the second Test, having made one change to their XI. India, on the other hand, made three, including dropping KL Rahul.
R Ashwin was given the ball in the eighth over of the morning after a short burst by the pacers, and he struck straightaway, removing New Zealand captain Tom Latham with his fifth delivery. Will Young and Devon Conway then added 44 for the second wicket, before Ashwin dismissed Young with a strangle down the leg side.
A major part of the credit for Young's wicket, however, goes to Sarfaraz, who was standing at backward short leg. Young feathered a full ball down the leg side to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, but none of the Indian fielders except Sarfaraz looked convinced. The on-field umpire gave it not out, after which Sarfaraz animatedly convinced Rohit Sharma that he heard a noise and that they should go for the review, which they did.
As it turned out, replays showed the ball had brushed Young's gloves, forcing the umpire to change his decision and give him out for 18. The wicket also meant Ashwin went past Nathan Lyon in the all-time highest wicket-takers list in World Test Championships.
At the time of writing, New Zealand are 138-3, with Devon Conway having just been dismissed.
