Indian captain Rohit Sharma slid to his worst ICC Test batting ranking since December 2018, in the latest update to the rankings on Wednesday (October 30).

On Wednesday, the latest update to the rankings was released by the ICC, and there was significant movement across the board. One of the more notable ones, though, was that of Rohit Sharma.

Rohit, ranked 15th in the Test batting rankings after last week's update, tumbled nine spots this week to sit in 24th place. Teammates Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant also slid, by six and five places respectively to 14th and 11th.

Lowest ranking since December 2018

This is Rohit's lowest spot in the Test batting rankings for nearly six years. His previous lowest ranking was 44th, which came after knocks of 63 not out and 5 against Australia in Melbourne in December 2018.

Twin centuries in his next Test match (176 & 127) against South Africa in October 2019, nearly a year later, helped boost him to 17th in the rankings. Since then, the furthest he had dropped was 23rd, after he scored 6 & 12 against England in February 2021.

But soon after, between February 27, 2021 and February 21, 2023, Rohit did not drop out of the top ten even once, and achieved his all-time high rating of 813 in September 2021, during which point he was the fifth-ranked Test batter in the world.

Rohit's current rating of 649 is also his lowest since February 2021, when he dropped as low as 626.

This rounds off a difficult few weeks for the Indian captain, whose form with the bat has been poor in the home matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand thus far. He scored 2 & 52 in the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand, followed up by 0 & 8 in Pune as India lost both matches to suffer their first home Test series defeat for 12 years.

Other updates to the rankings saw Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah lose his hold on the No.1 rank among bowlers, as South Africa's Kagiso Rabada took his spot. Pakistan spinner Noman Ali also made it to the top ten among bowlers.

Pakistan's Saud Shakeel shot up 20 spots in the batting rankings to make it to 7th place, while Rachin Ravindra also moved into 10th. India's Yashasvi Jaiswal gained one spot to displace Harry Brook in third place.
