New Zealand scripted history with a 3-0 sweep of the Test series in India – but not before Ravindra Jadeja and Ajaz Patel achieved a first.
New Zealand won the Mumbai Test match by 25 runs to become the first team to sweep India 3-0 in a three-Test series on Indian soil. Chasing 147, India became 29-5 before recovering to 71-5 and then 106-6 before collapsing to 121.
The wrecker-in-chief was Ajaz, who bowled unchanged through the Indian innings to finish with 6-57. Ajaz had also taken 5-103 in the first innings as India had collapsed from 180-4 to 263.
From two Test matches at the Wankhede Stadium, Ajaz has now taken 25 wickets – the most by any touring spinner at a single Indian venue. New Zealand got 37 Indian wickets across these two Tests.
However, Ajaz was not the only left-arm spinner who had a great Test match. For India, Ravindra Jadeja had 5-65 and 5-55 to take his Test career tally to 319 wickets, the most among Indian left-arm bowlers and the fourth-most among his countrymen in the format.
Jadeja and Ajaz became the first pair of left-arm bowlers, both of whom claimed two five-wicket hauls apiece in the same Test match. There are 10 occurrences of left-arm bowlers sharing three five-wicket hauls, the most recent being at Galle in 2021: on that occasion, Praveen Jayawickrama had 6-92 and 5-86, and Taijul Islam 5-72.
Mitchell Santner had claimed 7-53 and 6-104 at Pune, which made New Zealand the first touring team with four five-wicket hauls to left-arm spinners. There are four instances of teams achieving this at home.
This was also the first series where left-arm spinners got six five-wicket hauls (two each to Santner, Jadeja, and Ajaz) or three ten-wicket hauls.
Santner and Ajaz also set the third example of two ten-wicket hauls by a visiting side in a series in India, after Pakistan in 1979-80 (Sikander Bakht and Iqbal Qasim) and 1998-99 (Saqlain Mushtaq twice).
