Ajaz Patel rose to the top of an elite bowling list during the third India-New Zealand Test match in Mumbai.
The last time New Zealand toured India and played a Test match in Mumbai, his city of birth, Ajaz rewrote history books by taking all ten wickets in an innings. Now, playing just his second Test at the Wankhede Stadium, he has made another significant record his own, surpassing Ian Botham to become the highest wicket-taker at a single Indian venue in Test matches, among overseas bowlers.
Ajaz took 5-103 in the first innings of the ongoing Mumbai Test, restricting India's lead to 28 runs. In the second, defending a low total of 146, Patel led the way for New Zealand, picking four quick wickets, three of which came in the space of eight deliveries to give India a major scare heading into lunch on day three.

At the time of writing (lunch, day three), Ajaz's second-innings figures read 4-43 and match figures 9-146. Overall, he now has 23 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, having picked 14 in 2021. No other non-Indian bowler has as many at a single Indian venue in Tests. With the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja, Patel went past Ian Botham, who had 22 wickets at the Wankhede as well, at an astonishing average of 10.86.
The next best is Australia's Richie Benaud, who had 18 wickets from two Tests at the Eden Gardens, followed by Courtney Walsh of the West Indies, who had 17 wickets from two games at Wankhede. The next New Zealander after Patel on this list is Richard Hadlee, who had taken 15 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium from two Tests at an average of 17.26.
