India were clean-swept in a three-match Test series for the first time at home. Here are the ratings of the cricketers out of 10 from the series.
Rohit Sharma: 3/10
Tests: 3 | 91 runs @ 15.17, HS: 52, 1 fifty
One fifty for the Indian captain to go with five failures. While at least two of these were to good balls, some dismissals were the outcome of a high-risk approach. It is difficult to tell how Rohit would have fared had he tried to drop anchor instead of taking the bowling early on.
Yashasvi Jaiswal: 5/10
Tests: 3 | 190 runs @ 31.67, HS: 77, 1 fifty
A frustrating series for Jaiswal where he reached thirty four times in six innings but made it to forty only once. He looked dangerous in the failed chase in Pune, but needed to convert another of his starts to leave an impact on the series. Nevertheless, his 1,119 runs in 2024 are now the third-most in history in a single calendar year before turning 24.
Shubman Gill: 6/10
Tests: 2 | 144 runs @ 36.00, HS: 90, 1 fifty
After missing the first Test, Gill made two cameos in the second before coming to his own in the third, with a hard-fought, if lucky, 90. That innings went a long way towards India securing a first-innings lead.
Virat Kohli: 3/10
Tests: 3 | 93 runs @ 15.50, HS: 70, 1 fifty
One fifty and five failures – in other words, a very similar series to Rohit’s, but different in multiple ways. You do not associate a run out in Test cricket or getting bowled off a full toss with Kohli and yet, he managed both in this series.
Sarfaraz Khan: 5/10
Tests: 3 | 171 runs @ 28.50, HS: 150, 1 hundred
Sarfaraz’s 150 in the second innings at Bengaluru, India’s only hundred of the series, was offset by four single-digit scores and an 11. Some of his dismissals were the outcome of high-risk shots early in the innings, an approach that has brought him success in domestic cricket but not yet at the highest level.
Rishabh Pant: 9/10
Tests: 3 | 261 runs @ 43.50, HS: 99, 3 fifties | C: 2, St: 1
The 64 in the chase at Mumbai was arguably the best of the three fifties of Pant, easily India’s best batter of the series. However, there was also a dazzling 99 at Bengaluru, another 60 in Mumbai, and two cameos. Not only did Pant score more runs at a far better average than others but he was also the quickest scorer from the side – all that, after recovering from a knee injury.
KL Rahul: 2/10
Tests: 1 | 12 runs @ 6.00, HS: 12
A forgettable outing at Bengaluru for Rahul, who made way for Gill once the latter was fit.
Ravindra Jadeja: 8/10
Tests: 3 | 105 runs @ 17.50, HS: 42 | 16 wickets @ 21.56, BBI: 5-55, 2 5WIs, 1 10WM
Jadeja had a three-wicket haul in each of the first two Tests, along with 38 and 42 at Pune. However, he finally came to his elements at Mumbai with 5-65 (on the first day) and 5-55. His illustrious career has more to offer, at least in the longest format.
Washington Sundar: 9/10
Tests: 2 | 89 runs at 89.00, HS: 38* | 16 wickets @ 14.12, BBI: 7-59, 1 5WI, 1 10WM
Picked at Pune after more than three years, Washington impressed with 11 wickets (including seven on the first day) and two cameos. He added five wickets to his tally at Mumbai. There, he was left stranded in the first innings while looking good, and was last out after putting up a resistance in the second.
R Ashwin: 3/10
Tests: 3 | 51 runs @ 8.50, HS: 18 | 9 wickets @ 41.22, BBI: 3-63
Finally, an ordinary series for Ashwin at home, in both departments. There is little to write home aside from his last spell of the series, in the second innings at Mumbai.
Kuldeep Yadav: 3/10
Tests: 1 | 3 wickets @ 41.67, BBI: 3-99
Not at his best in his only Test, Kuldeep could not settle into a rhythm against Rachin Ravindra in the first innings. A groin issue has already forced him out of the Australia tour.
Jasprit Bumrah: 3/10
Tests: 2 | 3 wickets @ 42.33, BBI: 2-29
A forgettable side for the legend against his bogey opposition, against whom he now has nine wickets in five Tests at 45.44. There were a few probing spells, but none of them lived up to Bumrah’s reputation.
Akash Deep: 4/10
Tests: 2 | 2 wickets @ 36.50, BBI: 1-10
Impressive without being exceptional, Akash should be a certain starter in India’s next home Test match as age and injuries are catching up with Mohammed Shami.
Mohammed Siraj: 2/10
Tests: 2 | 2 wickets @ 59.00, BBI: 2-84
Siraj’s 14 Tests in India have fetched him 19 wickets at 37 apiece – in stark contrast with his 61 in 17 at 28.65 away from home. India are likely to use him sparingly and selectively over time.
Dhruv Jurel impressed behind the stumps when he stepped in as substitute wicketkeeper for Rishabh Pant in the first Test match.
