Washington Sundar took 11 wickets on his return to Test cricket after a three-and-a-half year absence as India slipped to a defeat against New Zealand in Pune. Here's a full list of the best bowling figures by an India bowler in a men's Test defeat.
Sundar was recalled to India's side in place of Kuldeep Yadav for the second Test of India's series against New Zealand. The move was made primarily to strengthen India's batting, having been added to the squad following the first Test after he scored a century in the Ranji Trophy. India were bowled out for 46 in the opening Test in Bengaluru, with Sundar adding depth to their batting attack in an effort to stabilise it from collapses.
However, it turned out to be that it was with the ball that Washington offered the most significant impact to the side.
Having won the toss, New Zealand were in a promising position at 197-3, with Rachin Ravindra looking set on 65 following his Bengaluru century. but, Sundar's round-the-wicket delivery to him straightened past the bat face and clipped the left-hander's off stump to send him back to the pavilion. The stunned glance back at the stumps by the New Zealand prodigy was testament to the quality of the dismissal.
Following that wicket, the Tamil Nadu allrounder stormed to his best-ever red ball bowling figures, and his first five-for in Test cricket, to restrict the tourists to 259. He finished with figures of 7-59 in the first innings. However, India's batting lineup failed to capitalise on the collapse Sundar had induced, and subsided to 156 all out in response, as Mitchell Santner took his own seven-for.
In the second innings, Sundar restarted where he left off in the first. He soon trapped a sweeping Devon Conway lbw for 17, and squeezed Ravindra for room as he attempted to cut, bowling him for a second time. He then enticed Daryl Mitchell to hole out for 18 before putting an end to Tom Latham's important 86.
New Zealand were bowled out for the second time in the match on the morning of day three for 255, setting India an improbable 359 runs to win in the final innings. Having made a good start, India were bowled out for 245 and fell to their first series-defeat at home since 2012.
