Rishabh Pant drs decision

Rishabh Pant was controversially given out on DRS at a crucial stage of India's run-chase during the Mumbai Test agianst New Zealand.

Chasing 147, India found themselves struggling at 29-5 before Rishabh Pant took centrestage, taking the attack to New Zealand and bringing India back in the game on the third morning in Mumbai. He added 42 with Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket and 35 with Washington Sundar for the seventh.

However, not long after lunch, Ajaz Patel got him to step out and fend at a short of length delivery, that popped up after deflecting from his pads and landed in the hands of the wicketkeeper. The on-field umpire gave it not out and the New Zealanders went up for a review.

The replays showed that the ball passed close to the bat at the same instant as the bat hit the pad, generating some noise and movement on the snicko-meter. However, the TV umpire felt there was enough evidence to rule that the ball had brushed the inside edge on its way to the pad.

The TV umpire took a while to come up with his decision. In the meantime, Pant was seen having animated discussions with the on-field umpires as soon as the replays showed a spike on the big screen, perhas explaining to them how it was a result of his bat hitting the pad and not bat hitting ball.

It didn't matter in the end, though, as the TV umpire instructed the on-field umpire to overturn his decision, sending Pant on a very slow and long walk back for a 57-ball 64.

With that, India were reduced to 106-7, still 41 short of their target. The decision raised a lot of eyebrows, including that of AB de Villiers, who felt that there was enough doubt as to whether the ball had actually hit the bat, or whether the spike was due to the bat hitting the pad.

There were other perspectives as well, with some feeling the umpire made the right call and that there was visible deflection there.

At the time of wriitng, India are 120-7, 27 short of their target with R Ashwin and Sundar fighting it out.
