Virat Kohli got back into the swing of the 50-over format, scoring 52 before being dismissed by Adil Rashid. Opener Shubman Gill, who put on 116 with Kohli for the second wicket, batted on as Shreyas Iyer then joined him in the middle.

Gill made his way past fifty, and then stepped on the accelerator to reach the three-figure mark off 95 balls – his seventh century in ODI cricket. He was eventually dismissed for 112 off 102 balls, bowled by Rashid.

Shubman Gill becomes fastest to 2,500 ODI runs, breaks Hashim Amla's record

Playing his 50th ODI, Gill went past a milestone early on in his innings. Starting the day on 2,475 career runs, once he hit Gus Atkinson for four off the penultimate ball of the powerplay, he went past 2,500 career runs – becoming the fastest-ever to do so.

Naturally, this also meant that at that point Gill had scored more runs in his first 50 ODI innings than anyone else in the history of the game. This record was previously held by former South Africa opener Hashim Amla, who managed 2,486 runs in his first 50 innings in ODI cricket.

Gill joins elite list with Ahmedabad ton

The century was Gill's first in ODI cricket at the Narendra Modi Stadium, making him just the fifth player to register centuries in all three formats at a single venue. In February 2023, Gill scored 126* in a T20I against New Zealand and in March that year, he scored 128 against Australia in a Test match.
