India secured a clean sweep of the ODI series against England, their final engagement before the Champions Trophy. Here are the player ratings for the series.
Yashasvi Jaiswal: 1/10
1 match, 15 runs at 15.00, HS: 15
Yashaswi Jaiswal made his much-awaited ODI debut in the first ODI in Nagpur but the southpaw failed to make the most of the opportunity and was replaced by Varun Chakravarthy in the Champions Trophy squad after falling to Rajasthan Royals teammate Jofra Archer.
Rohit Sharma: 5.5/10
3 matches, 122 runs at 40.66, HS: 119
Apart from his scintillating Cuttack ton, Rohit Sharma couldn’t muster much in this series. The bowling changes made by the Indian skipper were largely effective, but there should be more to come from Rohit the batter.
Shubman Gill: 9/10
3 matches, 259 runs at 86.33, HS: 112
Coming on the back of a morale-boosting century for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy, Shubman Gill batted with a calm mind, displaying his stroke play and using his height wisely to deal with the short bowling barrage employed by Archer and Mark Wood.
After the Player of the Match award in the Nagpur ODI, Gill scored a half-century in Cuttack and wrapped up the series with a century in his IPL home ground of Ahmedabad.
Virat Kohli: 4/10
2 matches, 57 runs at 28.5, HS: 52
Virat Kohli’s fans would be happy to see their idol back among the runs with a half-century in Ahmedabad but the batter getting out in the exact same manner to a wrist-spinner in consecutive matches could be a cause of concern.
Shreyas Iyer: 9/10
3 matches, 181 runs at 60.33, HS: 78
After almost sitting out of the first ODI, Shreyas Iyer proved why he is the perfect fit for the No.4 position in India’s white-ball setup as his innings of 59 runs off 36 balls in the first ODI changed the course of the match after India had lost two early wickets.
If not for his unfortunate run-out in the second ODI, Iyer might well have finished the series with three half-centuries.
Axar Patel: 7.5/10
3 matches, 106 runs at 53.00, HS: 52
3 wickets at 30.66, BBI: 2-22
Since Gautam Gambhir has been appointed the head coach of the Indian side, he has been trying to install a left-handed floater at No.5 in a right-heavy batting order.
In Axar Patel, he has found the perfect answer as the all-rounder proved his batting mettle with two 40+ scores at No.5 and faltered a bit when he was sent at No.7 in Ahmedabad.
KL Rahul: 3.5/10
3 matches, 52 runs at 17.33, HS: 40
Batting at No.6 wasn’t fruitful for KL Rahul who was back to his best at No.5 when given a chance in Ahmedabad as he hit 40 off 29 balls. Rahul’s glove work behind the stumps left a bit to be desired, but he did pull off a good stumping in the third ODI.
Hardik Pandya: 3/10
3 matches, 36 runs at 18.00, HS: 17
3 wickets at 42.66, BBI: 2-38
Hardik Pandya didn’t get much to do with the bat in hand and dismissed two tail-enders in the last ODI to cap a quiet series for him personally.
Ravindra Jadeja: 9/10
2 matches, 23 runs, HS: 12*
6 wickets at 10.16, BBI: 3/29
Like Gill, Ravindra Jadeja also made the most of his Ranji Trophy appearance and got used to bowling in a rhythm which proved to be fruitful for the all-rounder who picked 6 scalps bowling at an economy rate of almost 3. Moreover, Jadeja scored the winning runs in both ODIs he featured in, showcasing India’s batting depth as he came out to bat at No.8 in both fixtures.
Washington Sundar: 4/10
1 match, 14 runs at 14.00, HS: 14
1 wicket at 43.00, BBI: 1-43
Jadeja was rested in the final ODI which gave Washington Sundar a chance to show his talent and the all-rounder scored 14 off 14 with the bat and struck a solitary wicket as well after bowling economically in the powerplay overs.
Harshit Rana: 8/10
3 matches, 6 wickets at 24.33, BBI: 3/53
Making his ODI debut in the series, Harshit Rana impressed one and all with the trajectories of his deliveries. With an ability to bowl in the powerplay, in the middle overs, and in the death overs, Rana was chosen ahead of Mohammed Siraj and has been fast-tracked into India’s Champions Trophy squad as well after Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out due to a lower back injury.
In Rana, India have found a solid middle-overs wicket-taker, as the Kolkata Knight Riders fast bowler took 4 wickets crucial outside Powerplay 1. He was expensive with the new ball, though, which could be cause for concern.
Mohammed Shami: 4/10
2 matches, 2 wickets at 52.00, BBI: 1/38
Still not at full fitness, Mohammed Shami did well in Nagpur but struggled in Cuttack as he conceded 66 runs in 7.5 overs before being rested for the final match.
Arshdeep Singh: 8/10
1 match, 2 wickets at 16.50, BBI: 2/33
India’s search for a left-arm seamer has come to a halt as Arshdeep Singh has matured into a lethal bowler who takes wickets in the powerplay overs on a regular basis. In Ahmedabad, Arshdeep dismissed both opening batters, Ben Duckett and Phil Salt when they were firing at high strike rates, nipping the danger in the bud.
Kuldeep Yadav: 4/10
2 matches, 2 wickets at 45.50, BBI: 1/38
Like Shami, Kuldeep was returning from an injury and he looked iffy in Nagpur before being rested for the Cuttack ODI.
In Ahmedabad, Kuldeep looked much more at home, delivering balls with razor-sharp precision as he took the wicket of the well-set Tom Banton while keeping the runs in check.
Varun Chakravarthy: 4.5/10
1 match, 1 wicket at 54.00, BBI: 1/54
Another debutant from the series who has been fast tracked into the Champions Trophy squad, Varun Chakravarthy had the English batters at sea during the T20I series but they looked a bit more comfortable facing the spinner when they had a lot of overs to bat.
After dismissing Salt, Chakravarthy couldn’t pick another wicket but has posed a question to the management about the lead spinner role in the side with his attacking lines throughout the match.
