England head coach Brendon McCullum stand with Phil Salt and Brydon Carse during practice for IND v ENG T20Is

England’s first assignment of 2025 comes in a white ball tour of India, which will get underway this Wednesday, with a T20I at the iconic Eden Gardens.

The series will kickstart an exceedingly busy couple of months for the England squad, led by their new head coach Brendon McCullum, who was appointed to the role in September of last year. Owing to his commitments with England’s Test side, this is the first time McCullum will oversee the white-ball side in person.

England begin the tour of India with 5 T20Is, followed by 3 ODIs, each match spaced three days apart. The final match of the tour (an ODI in Ahmedabad) takes place on February 12, and with England’s opening fixture of the 2025 Champions Trophy commencing February 22, McCullum will be hoping to use this tour to finalise his best XI, with multi-format players available for selection.

Noticeable absentees from both England’s ODI and T20I squads are the Surrey duo of Will Jacks and Sam Curran, both of whom are currently impressing in franchise cricket. Joe Root, has been selected for England’s ODI squad for the first time since the ICC World Cup in November 2023, and is expected to reprise his role at No.3.

India have won the last 4 T20I series against England, whose last series triumph came back in 2014. The home side have selection questions of their own to answer ahead of the Champions Trophy. Mohammed Shami is back in the India squad after over a year on the sidelines with injury, while fitness questions also hang over Jasprit Bumrah. The T20I squad comes off a high-scoring run since the retirement of several senior players following their T20 World Cup win, having passed 200 seven times in 11 T20Is since then.

The two sides last came face to face in the semi-finals of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, where India blew England away, winning by 68-runs, and eventually winning the tournament with a 7-run victory against South Africa.
