Abhishek Sharma took only 37 balls to reach his second T20I hundred, during the fifth T20I against England, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Abhishek blazed away to the second-fastest fifty for India (the fastest by an Indian opener) in men’s T20Is, reaching the milestone off only 17 balls. He continued with his strokeplay, and came within touching distance of the fastest hundred by an Indian in the format. That record is held by Rohit Sharma, who took only 35 balls to get there against Sri Lanka at Indore in 2017.
Abhishek was on 94 from 32 balls when Adil Rashid came on to bowl the 10th over of the innings. Rashid contained him with his first two balls, leaving Abhishek needing a six off the next ball to equal Rohit. He smote the next ball through cover, but for only four runs.
The over ended with Abhishek on 99 off 36 balls. He needed another ball, from Brydon Carse, to get to the milestone. At 37 balls, this is now the second-fastest T20I hundred for India.
At the time of writing, India were 194-5 in 15 overs with Abhishek (108 in 44 balls) and Rinku Singh (1 in 1) at the crease.
