Virat Kohli is not part of India's playing XI for the first ODI against England in Nagpur.
Ahead of India's first ODI since the Sri Lanka tour last year, Kohli was expected to be one of the first names on the team sheet as India gear up for the Champions Trophy which begins after this series.
However, as the teams were announced at the toss, Kohli was not named in India's XI. Shreyas Iyer was carded to play at Kohli's No.3 spot, with Shubman Gill, usually an opener, at No.4. Yashasvi Jaiswal was listed to open alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, the former making his ODI debut.
IND vs ENG ODIs: Is Virat Kohli injured?
After losing the toss and being put into the field, Rohit said, "We wanted to bowl first. We want to come out and be aggressive at the start and see what we can do thereafter. This series presents us fresh opportunity to come out and play well. Jaiswal and Rana make their debut. Unfortunately Kohli is not playing, (due to) a right knee problem that happened last night."
In December, there had been unconfirmed rumours of a right knee issue for Kohli after he had been spotted batting with a bandage on the area during a nets session in Australia. He also missed Delhi's Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra, before playing against Railways, scoring six in his only innings.
India also handed an ODI debut to fast bowler Harshit Rana, after the youngster had played in Test cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and played in the fourth T20I against England as a concussion substitute. There had been suggestions that mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy could make his ODI debut as well, but India opted for all-rounders Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja, along with left-arm leggie Kuldeep Yadav as their three spinners.
