Virat Kohli returns to the pavilion after his dismissal against Hasan Mahmud in opening session of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chepauk

Watch: Virat Kohli was caught behind yet again while trying to play an expansive cover drive off Hasan Mahmud in the opening session of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai.

The red-soil pitch at Chepauk meant the seamers would play a vital role in the first session, with both sides naming three fast bowlers in the XI, a rare moment in these conditions. Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud breathed fire after they put India to bat first. In a fiery spell, he first removed hosts captain Rohit Sharma for a 19-ball six before strangling No.3 batter Shubman Gill down the leg side for a duck, reducing the opposition to 28-2.

Virat Kohli walked in next, hoping to resurrect the innings, but Hasan had other plans. In the 10th over, he tried to exploit Kohli’s age-old weakness. He drew Kohli forward, luring him to a cover drive. The ball was a touch shorter and moved away from Kohli, who edged it to wicketkeeper Litton Das for a run-a-ball six. Bangladesh were all over India, who slipped to 34-3.
