Watch: Virat Kohli narrowly escaped getting run out after Khaled Ahmed failed to take the bails off despite the batter being nearly halfway down the pitch during day four of the India-Bangladesh Test.
India got off to a record start during their innings against Bangladesh, becoming the quickest to 50, 100 and 150 team runs as they look for a result in the rain-affected Kanpur Test. Kohli, who walked out at No.5, was batting on two off three balls when he faced the first ball of Khaled’s over, the 19th in the innings.
He bowled a good-length ball outside the off stump to Kohli, who managed a thick under-edge and sent it right next to the pitch. With Kohli, and India, looking for quick runs, he set off for a single but was lucky to survive.
The bowler ran towards the ball and attempted an underarm throw towards the stumps, seemingly unaware of how far off Kohli was from the crease. Kohli was expecting to be run out and had given up on trying to get back but the lifeline would have brought a sigh of relief to the batter who is struggling for runs in the format of late. The missed opportunity left the Bangladesh fielders furious, with wicketkeeper Litton Das pointing towards Khaled in disbelief.
Following the incident, Rishabh Pant, who was batting at the other end, gave Kohli a big hug, leaving the latter amused. Kohli sent the next ball for a four and quickly raced away to 24 in the first 16 balls that he faced. He also became the fastest to 27,000 international runs during his knock.
