Jasprit Bumrah, who went past 400 international wickets on Friday.

Jasprit Bumrah crossed the mark of 400 international wickets during his four-wicket haul in the first Test against Bangladesh.

In the first Test in Chennai, Bangladesh had chosen to bowl first and reduced India to 144-6 before tea on day one. But a stunning partnership between R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja lifted them out of trouble, and they eventually registered 376 by the morning of day two. Hasan Mahmud took 5-83 for Bangladesh.

India's bowlers then took over, running through Bangladesh in a flash. Just after tea on the second day, the visitors had been bowled out for 149, handing India a 227-run lead.

Jasprit Bumrah stepped up for his side once again, taking 4-50 in 11 fiery overs. He got the ball rolling with an absolute peach to dismiss Shadman Islam in the very first over, before inducing edges from Mushfiqur Rahim and Hasan Mahmud and finally cleaning up Taskin Ahmed with a searing yorker.

Bumrah's third wicket of the day, his dismissal of Mahmud, saw him reach the significant milestone of 400 international wickets. He now has 401 in total – 163 in Tests, 149 in ODIs and 89 in T20Is. He is the 45th pace bowler in men's cricket to achieve the feat.

Among Indian fast bowlers, Bumrah is the sixth player to take 400 international wickets. His contemporaries, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami have also achieved this. The other three to do so are Kapil Dev, Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath.

With 687 international wickets to his name, Kapil Dev is the only Indian pacer to claim 400 wickets in Test cricket alone, with 434. Zaheer and Srinath have both recorded tallies of over 500 international wickets.

Kapil was also the fastest among these six to the mark of 400 international wickets, doing so in 168 matches. This is a measure slightly skewed in his favour, given the higher proportion of Test matches he played. Shami managed this in 171 matches, and Ishant in 186. Bumrah has done it in his 196th match.

Four Indian spinners have taken 400 or more international wickets – Anil Kumble (953), R Ashwin (744), Harbhajan Singh (707) and Ravindra Jadeja (570).
