Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kamindu Mendis rise in latest rankings

The latest update to the rankings came on Wednesday, October 2. Jaiswal had moved into fifth place among Test batters at the end of the first India-Bangladesh Test in Chennai, and his performance in the second Test in Kanpur has seen him rise to third, with a career-best rating of 792.

Jaiswal struck two half-centuries, 72 & 51, in Kanpur as India unleashed the full force of their batting lineup on Bangladesh in an effort to force a result in a match which had seen two days lost due to poor weather and ground conditions.

England's Joe Root remains the top-ranked Test batter in the world, with Kane Williamson in second place. Steven Smith is fourth, with compatriot Usman Khawaja in fifth place. Virat Kohli, who had slipped out of the top ten last week, has moved back up six spots into sixth place.

Another significant move made over the last week was that of Sri Lankan batter Kamindu Mendis, who has enjoyed a record-breaking start to his international red-ball career. Mendis became the second-fastest ever to 1000 Test runs against New Zealand in Galle, where he struck an unbeaten 182 in Sri Lanka's only innings in the match.

He moved up five spots to 11th place, also achieving a career-best. Other big movers include Indian captain Rohit Sharma (down five spots to 15th) and New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell (down six spots to joint-9th). Dinesh Chandimal also moved up six spots, to 20th.
