Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud created history with his haul of 5-83 against India in the first Test between the sides in Chennai.
Bangladesh elected to field first on day one (Thursday), becoming only the second team to ever do so at this venue. They were rewarded instantly though, as Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were dismissed in the first session.
Bangladesh picked up another three wickets in the second session before a stunning partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and hometown hero R Ashwin saw them put on 195 for the seventh wicket by the end of the day's play.
Both players were dismissed early on day two, though, as Bangladesh did well with the second new ball to take the remaining four wickets and bowl India out for 376.
Hasan Mahmud stars with five-for, makes Test history
24-year-old pacer Hasan Mahmud was the standout bowler for Bangladesh on day one, as he took all of the first four wickets to fall, and also became the 16th player to take the wickets of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the same innings.
His spell on the first morning overshadowed even that of his senior partner, Taskin Ahmed, and he ended the day with figures of 4-58. On the second morning, it was Taskin who took three wickets – of Ravindra Jadeja, Akash Deep and R Ashwin.
Hasan then took the final wicket of the Indian innings, drawing an edge from Jasprit Bumrah to finish with 5-83 and create Test match history, by becoming the first Bangladeshi bowler to take five wickets in a Test innings on Indian soil.

Before this match, the only bowler from Bangladesh to have taken even four in a Test innings in India was Abu Jayed, who picked up 4-108 in Indore in November 2019. Mustafizur Rahman is the only other Bangladeshi to take a five-for in India, picking up 5-22 in the 2016 T20 World Cup against New Zealand in Kolkata.
Hasan also became the first visiting Asian pacer in over 15 years to take a five-wicket haul against India. The last one to do so was Pakistan's Yasir Arafat, with 5-161 in Bengaluru in December 2007. Between these two though, there has only been one Asian spinner to take five against India in India – Sri Lanka's Rangana Herath, who took 5-121 in November 2009.
Bangladesh as a team also achieved a unique first. All 10 wickets were taken caught, making this the 92nd time it has happened in Test history. It is also the fourth time it has happened in 2024, but the first time ever that Bangladesh have taken all 10 wickets caught in a Test innings.
