Rohit Sharma survived a caught-behind dismissal after Bangladesh failed to review the not out decision on day four of the second Test on Monday (September 30).

What was the match situation?

With two days of the Test abandoned due to a wet outfield, India needed to score quick runs to ensure a result after dismissing Bangladesh for 233 on the morning of day four. India openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma started aggressively, with the duo taking only 18 balls to score 50 runs, the fastest team fifty in a Test match.

The Indian captain led the way, becoming the first opener to smash the first two balls he faced in an innings for two sixes. India were 29 after the first two overs with the openers looking to attack every delivery when Bangladesh came close to a respite.

The non-review of Rohit’s caught-behind

The first ball of the third over, sent down by Hasan Mahmud, was pitched outside the off stump. Rohit poked to keeper Litton Das. The ball was close to the bat, with replays also suggesting a noise, but the on-field umpire ruled it not out.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the only Bangladesh fielder to appeal for a catch, but with both neither Hasan nor Litton convinced, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto decided against taking the DRS.

The big screen on the venue later showed there indeed was an outside edge and that Rohit would have been dismissed for a four-ball 12.

Rohit was also in the midst of another controversial DRS call in the next over. The third ball, by Mehidy, was short and turned in, hitting Rohit on the pad. It was given out by Richard Kettleborough, who had also wrongly given Virat Kohli out in the first Test match. Rohit reviewed immediately and stayed on after the impact was outside the leg stump.

However, he was bowled a delivery later for 23 runs in 11 balls, with his innings containing three sixes and a four.
