India’s No.9 Akash Deep walked out with Virat Kohli’s bat and smashed two successive sixes, leaving the former India captain in splits during day four of the India-Bangladesh Test.
In need of quick runs before declaring, Deep walked out with intent at No.9 after the fall of Ashwin's wicket in the 34th over of the innings. He tried to slog sweep the first ball that he faced, off Shakib Al Hasan but was beaten as the ball turned away.
The Bengal pacer, who had hit 503 runs in 42 first-class innings at an average of 12.89 before the game, remained unfazed at missing out on the big shot and attempted to go for a big hit yet again. He smoked the second ball that he faced straight down the ground for a fine six, before repeating the same next up.
Shakib sent down a shorter ball, which Deep heaved over deep mid-wicket for another six, leaving the Indian dressing room, especially Virat Kohli, in laughter.
It later came to light that the bat Deep used belonged to Kohli, who remained thrilled that the Bengal pacer had used his equipment to score the crucial runs for India. Deep had earlier shared an Instagram story where he had thanked Kohli for giving him his signed bat, which is seemingly what he used while batting against Bangladesh.
Deep had used another bat in the last Test and had a third bat during the recent Duleep Trophy.
He was dismissed for 12 in five balls, following which India declared their innings, taking a 52-run lead.
