Rahane had been steadying the ship alongside Virat Kohli after Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma fell within seven overs. India had reached 139 without loss before Jaiswal got out to Jason Holder. While Kohli passed fifty and looked fluent at the other end, Rahane battled hard early in his innings with limited opportunities to score.

He was on eight off 35 balls when Gabriel struck. The ball was angled in towards Rahane, dragging him across the wicket so far that his leg stump was exposed. As Rahane tried to bring his bat down in defence, the ball caught an inside edge and smashed into his off stump, which cartwheeled out of the ground.

Gabriel leapt in the air and pumped his arm in celebration, while Rahane was left staring back at his demolished stumps. Gabriel had had a thankless day before that. He had bowled nine wicketless overs which were taken for 43 runs.

India didn’t lose a wicket for the rest of the day, with Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja putting on an unbeaten 106-run partnership. Kohli will resume on day two on 87, looking to score his first century in the West Indies since 2016.
