Samson scored his first international hundred today (December 21), breaching the three-figure mark in the final ODI of the three-match series against South Africa.
Coming into bat at No.3, Samson anchored the India innings to near-perfection after India lost the toss and were put into bat, with debutant Rajat Patidar falling in the fifth over.
The South Africa bowlers kept things tight as Samson negotiated the tricky middle overs phase along with KL Rahul and Tilak Varma. He reached his hundred in the 44th over, setting up a platform for India to finish at a score close to 300 (296).
Samson celebrated his hundred by doing a ‘flexing bicep’ celebration aimed at the dressing room. This might have been his first international century, but it was not the first time he brought out this celebration.
In an IPL 2020 game against the Mumbai Indians, Samson had done a similar ‘bicep flex’ celebration after scoring a fifty in a steep run-chase of 196. After that match, he had explained the meaning behind his celebration.
“Reminding myself what my name is, I think Samson is the strongest man in the world, I keep remembering that. I am very strong and I can hit more sixes,” Samson said after the IPL 2020 game.
Having only been given irregular chances in the national team until now, this celebration was perhaps another show of strength from Samson, another reminder to himself that ‘he is very strong’.
Samson’s knock comprised six fours and three sixes, taking him to 108 off 114 balls.
