India named four different squads for their series against New Zealand and Bangladesh on Monday, with the biggest omission being Prithvi Shaw, who continues to miss out.
Shaw was a notable miss as the BCCI named the ODI and T20I squads for New Zealand and the 50-over and Test sides to tour Bangladesh. A number of new players – Rajat Patidar, Kuldeep Sen, Yash Dayal – got call-ups, Umran Malik returned to the limited-overs set-up, and Shubman Gill got a maiden T20I call-up.
The side will miss the services of the injured Jasprit Bumrah. Ravindra Jadeja, though, returned to the side after missing the 2022 T20 World Cup due to a knee injury, which he suffered during the Asia Cup.
Ravi Bishnoi, who last played against Pakistan in the Asia Cup and was named standby for the T20 World Cup, has not been selected in any squad. Sarfaraz Khan, who has been in phenomenal form in the Ranji Trophy of late, was unable to find a place in the Test squad, but Shaw’s mission was the biggest talking point.
Shaw last played an international match in July 2021, in Sri Lanka. He has played only six ODIs and a lone T20I, and continues to be ignored despite impressing with his fearless batting in the IPL. Overall, Shaw has a high score of 134 in 89 T20 innings with a strike rate of 152.
During the press conference to announce the teams, chief selector Chetan Sharma stated that the panel was in “constant touch” with Shaw: “We are in constant touch with him, he’s doing well. There is nothing wrong with him at all. The thing is we have to look at the set-up, we are trying to give chances to those who are performing and are already in the set-up. He will definitely get his chances very soon the way he is batting, even whenever we are there for matches we are talking to him.”
His absence left the cricketing world talking. Shaw himself posted a cryptic message after the squads were announced.

We must be the greatest cricket playing nation ever if Prithvi Shaw is not good enough to get into an India squad in any of the formats, leave alone make the XI!

Recency bias in selections is something I have disliked. When it happens to you as a player you are left without understanding a lot of things, leaves you in the dark. Don't understand many exclusions here, but it is what it is. #IndianCricketTeam

Feel for Prithvi Shaw.
India announced 3 white ball squads today, in which two – all the seniors were rested but no space for a guy who has proven & made huge impact in domestic cricket.
I don't know what he has to do more to play in the Indian team.

Shubman Gill over Prithvi Shaw in T20Is! Not sure what Shaw has to do to get in…

Could anyone tell me what guys like Sarfaraz Khan and Prithvi Shaw need to do to get a place in India’s Test and limited-overs teams’ respectively? As of now, it seems exceptional performances at the domestic level aren’t enough!

Must be so tough on Prithvi Shaw who hasn't featured in any of the 4 squads. Too good a player. I'm sure he'll play for India soon. Started his career with a ton on Test debut. Was POTM for his 24-ball 43 in an ODI v SL last year. Match winner. Will get his chances

Will be surprised if Prithvi Shaw, Sanju Samson are not picked for the Indian team that will be touring New Zealand. They are assets. Not liabilities.

Prithvi Shaw will get a chance soon says Chetan Sharma. Just don't get how he is not part of any of the squads announced today.

Having watched both Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan play since their school days, I have been a big supporter of the two. Unbelievable talent backed with right commitment & attitude. Both the lads deserved a national call-up.
They are talents you straightaway draft in the XI.
