India captain Rohit Sharma’s preparation for the upcoming Edgbaston Test against England was cut short after he fell to seamer Roman Walker on the first day of India’s warm-up fixture against Leicestershire at Grace Road.
In a game that does not hold first-class status, the Leicestershire side contains a number of India players in need of match practice ahead of the England Test; Prasidh Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara are all in the Leicestershire team for the game.
Rohit fell to Walker, top-edging his trademark pull shot to Abidine Sakande at midwicket. On India’s tour of England last summer, it was a shot that got him into a trouble a few times; he was caught off short-pitched bowling four times in four Tests against England last summer.
Walker enjoyed a productive first session, also accounting for Hanuma Vihari – caught in the slip cordon – and Ravindra Jadeja, who was trapped lbw for 13. Walker, 21, is yet to make his first-class debut but has made 15 professional appearances in white-ball cricket. The seamer started his professional career at Glamorgan before joining Leicestershire on loan last year and then making the move permanent ahead of the 2022 season. Walker was part of England’s 2018 Under-19 World Cup squad.
