Watch: Umran Malik was at his ferocious best during a T20 warm-up match between India and Derbyshire, putting his express pace to good use with a couple of wickets.
Malik, who made his T20I debut in the series against Ireland last month, did not have the most memorable of outings, ending the with just two wickets at an average of 56 and an economy rate of 11.20 in two games. However, he showed why he should not be written off with some fine bowling in the warm-up match against Derbyshire, ratting the stumps of Leus du Plooy and Brooke Guest.
Malik did not have the best start to the game, conceding two fours off the first two deliveries, but bounced back with a searing delivery that du Plooy tried to flick for a third successive boundary. However, he completely missed the ball, as it went on to dismantle the bails.
“He might have broken a bail there or something,” said one of the commentators, “because the umpire [Peter] Hartley is waving furiously to the ground staff”.
Malik returned a few overs later to get his second wicket of the day, uprooting Guest’s middle stump with a length ball. The wicketkeeper, on the lookout for some big runs, attempted a big slog but failed to make contact as the ball hurried him for pace, clattering his middle stump behind.
Malik ended the match with figures of 4-0-31-2 as India won by seven wickets, chasing down 151 in 16.4 overs.
