Ishan Kishan, replacing the injured Rohit Sharma in India’s XI, waltzed to a scintillating ODI double hundred against Bangladesh in Chattogram, breaking a plethora of records in the process.

Playing just his 11th ODI, and his first since October, Kishan broke the record for the fastest ODI double century – off 126 balls – eclipsing Chris Gayle’s seven-year record (138 balls). He reached his century in the 35th over of India’s innings.

Kishan eventually ended with 210 off 131 balls, the joint fifth-highest individual score in men’s ODIs, tied with Fakhar Zaman [210*]. Only Rohit Sharma, Martin Guptill, Virender Sehwag and Chris Gayle have scored more runs in a men’s ODI innings.

The strike rate – 160.30 – is the highest strike rate across an ODI double century. He reached his first hundred off 85 balls, but took just 41 balls to complete his second hundred.

It was also the first instance of an India batter hitting a double century away from home: Rohit’s three double hundreds, Sachin Tendulkar’s 200* and Virender Sehwag’s 219 all came on Indian soil. Only two other batters have hit an away men’s ODI century: Gayle (Australia) and Zaman (Zimbabwe).

At 24 years and 145 days, he is also the youngest to score a men’s ODI double century.

Before this knock, Kishan’s highest ODI score was 93: he became the first batter to convert his maiden hundred into a double century in the format. It is now the highest ODI individual score against Bangladesh.

As pointed out by statistician Kausthub Gudipati, it was the first one-day century by an India opener since Rohit Sharma hit one against Australia in January 2020, ending a 1056-day drought.

Kishan came into the XI after Rohit Sharma was ruled out from the final ODI of the series, having dislocated his thumb in the second match. Kishan last played a one-dayer in October, against South Africa, after which Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, and then Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan, were the preferred opening pairs. Virat Kohli opened the batting in the previous game alongside Dhawan, with the injured Rohit coming in at No.9.

Later in the Chattogram game, Virat Kohli – Kishan’s partner through a 190-run stand – reached his 72nd international century and his 44th in the format. He moved past Ponting’s tally of 71 international tons – only Sachin Tendulkar (100) now has more centuries across formats.
