India lost to New Zealand by 58 runs in their 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup tournament opener. Here are the updated standing in both groups after the defeat.
India are in Group A in the tournament, which was shifted to the United Arab Emirates from Bangladesh. Their group also features Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, with Australia being the only team in that group who are yet to play a game. On Thursday, Pakistan had inflicted a 31-run defeat on Sri Lanka, which propelled them up the table.
On Friday, India did not have the greatest start after they lost the toss and were asked to bowl first. The New Zealand openers raced away to 55 in the powerplay, with Georgia Plimmer scoring 30 in her first 18 balls.
India bounced back in the middle overs but a 36-ball 57* from Sophie Devine ensured New Zealand ended with a healthy 160-4.
