Defending champions Australia eased past New Zealand to make it two wins out of two at the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Australia posted 148-8 at Sharjah. In response, New Zealand were 54-1 at one point before they collapsed to 60-6, then 88 all out. The defeat hurt New Zealand’s net run rate considerably, and they slipped to third place, below Pakistan. However, New Zealand’s NRR (-0.050) is still above India’s -1.217, and unlike New Zealand, India are yet to play Australia. Pakistan, the other team with two points from two games, have not played Australia either.
Having won their all-important game against South Africa, England can now breathe easy. All they need is to pick up points from the Scotland and the West Indies games. South Africa, too, have beaten the West Indies, and should not be too fussed after the defeat. The equation does not seem as simple for the West Indies or Bangladesh, who now need to beat at least one of the stronger sides (in the West Indies’s case, specifically England).
The chances of qualification for Sri Lanka (Group A) and Scotland (Group B) are purely of academic interest at this point.
