Diana Baig limps of the field during Pakistan's opening women's T20 World Cup match

Pakistan were dealt what could be a disastrous early blow in their T20 World Cup campaign when attack leader Diana Baig limped off just one ball into Sri Lanka's chase in their opening match of the tournament.

Baig opened the bowling after Pakistan were bowled out for 116 in Sharjah on the first day of the competition. She sent down her first delivery to Vishmi Gunaratne, and was taken for a single to bring Chamari Athapaththu on strike. As she ran into bowl her second ball, she pulled up as she neared the crease, clearly in pain.

The physio was called on to assess the injury, which looked to concern her right calf, which already had significant strapping around it. After brief treatment, she got up to test out her ability to continue, but looked still in significant pain as she practiced her run up. She limped off the field, leaving captain Fatima Sana to complete her opening over.

Her injury could leave Pakistan with a significant dilemma in the match. They only have one other specialist seam bowler in Aliya Riaz in the XI, as well as all-rounder Sana, and they will need to rely heavily on their spinners. If Baig is unable to feature in the rest of the tournament, it will also be a significant blow for Pakistan. Baig has been a focal point in Pakistan's attack for a number of years, and was set to be a significant presence for them during this campaign.

She missed last year's T20 World Cup with a finger injury, having also recently recovered from a shoulder injury to return to international cricket. Since her debut in 2015, she has played over 100 international matches for Pakistan and has 38 wickets at an economy rate of 6.05 in T20Is.

No statement has yet been issued on the severity of her injury.
