After Pakistan's victory over Bangladesh earlier today (April 19), West Indies's hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Women's World Cup remain alive. Here's what they need, net run rate-wise, to make it.
Bangladesh elected to bat first at the LCCA Ground this morning, knowing a win would mean they would qualify for the World Cup alongside Pakistan, and ahead of West Indies. They ended up limping to 178-9, thanks to Ritu Moni (48) and Fahima Khatun (44*). Sadia Iqbal was Pakistan's standout with the ball, taking 3-28.
Pakistan lost Shawaal Zulfiqar early, but Muneeba Ali and Sidra Amin put on 80 for the second wicket to get Pakistan back on track. Muneeba and Aliya Riaz then had a 74-run stand which more or less sealed the deal. Riaz and Natalia Pervaiz completed the formalities to seal a 7-wicket win with 62 balls to spare.
That damaging loss has knocked Bangladesh's net run rate down to +0.639, which means they could be knocked out if West Indies win by enough against Thailand at the Gaddafi Stadium, a match that is currently underway.
What is West Indies' NRR requirement to qualify for the 2025 Women's World Cup?
With net run rate in mind, West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews chose to field first against Thailand. West Indies' net run rate is already in the negative, and it will take a monumental effort to overhaul Bangladesh. But it is not impossible.
The following table lays out a few reference points for what West Indies need to do to boost their NRR enough to overtake Bangladesh, and make it to the World Cup.
If THA score... | WI need to chase in... | Required Run Rate |
125 | 50 balls (or) 57, if they score 131 | 15.1 |
150 | 56 balls (or) 63, if they score 156 | 16.2 |
175 | 62 balls (or) 68, if they score 181 | 17.0 |
200 | 68 balls (or) 74, if they score 206 | 17.7 |
225 | 73 balls (or) 79, if they score 231 | 18.6 |
250 | 78 balls (or) 84, if they score 256 | 19.3 |
275 | 83 balls (or) 88, if they score 281 | 20.0 |
300 | 88 balls (or) 93, if they score 306 | 20.5 |
At the time of writing, Thailand are 113-6 in 32.4 overs.
