In the third game of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier, Bangladesh defeated Thailand by a massive margin of 178 runs - here’s the updated WWCQ points table after today’s match.
Bangladesh batters make hay
The two teams were playing their first game in the tournament, in Lahore. Bangladesh were sent in to bat first and lost Ishma Tanjim early in the fourth over. Opener Fargana Hoque and Sharmin Akhter, however, ensured there were no more setbacks early on, stitching together a 104-run stand. Hoque was dismissed for an 82-ball 53 in the 28th over, following which Akhter and skipper Nigar Sultana came together and took the score over the 270-run mark. They posted 271-3 in the end, with Akhter remaining unbeaten on 94 and Sultana smashing an 80-ball 101 at a strike rate of 126.25.
In reply, Thailand could not put up a resistance, losing regular wickets after a 38-run opening stand. They lost their last five wickets for 27 runs and were eventually all out for 93, handing Bangladesh a 178-run victory, their largest in women’s ODIs.
For Bangladesh, Fahima Khatun and Jannatul Ferdus picked up five wickets each, making it just the second time in ODI history, across the men’s and women’s formats, that two bowlers picked up two five-fors in the same innings.
