The preceding series’ ahead of the T20 World Cup, which beings on June 1, are well underway, with several sides engaged in bilateral encounters. West Indies, who will co-host the tournament with the USA, will complete their final preparation for the competition against South Africa. All three matches in the series will be played at Sabina Park in Jamaica.

The hosts will be without several of their players selected for the T20 World Cup, who have either recently returned from the IPL or are still competing in the knockout stages. Brandon King will captain the West Indies in the absence of full-time captain Rovman Powell, who is playing for Rajasthan Royals. Shimron Hetmyer is also playing for Rajasthan while Andre Russell and Sherfane Rutherford are engaged with KKR, who have already qualified for the final. Nicholas Pooran and Shai Hope played for LSG and Delhi Capitals respectively before they were knocked out of the tournament, and are being rested.

Matthew Forde and Kyle Mayers, who did not make the T20 World Cup squad, have been called-up in the IPL players’ absence. The series could also be a chance for Shamar Joseph to make his T20I debut. The hero of the West Indies’ Test win against Australia at the Gabba has been included in their T20 World Cup squad having never played international white ball cricket before.

South Africa are also missing players to the IPL, including their captain, Aiden Markram. Heinrich Klaasen, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada are also unavailable for the series. While the series should provide a chance to warm-up for the World Cup, with so many players absent, it’s also a chance for experimentation.
