Azmutullah Omarzai of Afghanistan bowls during the ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup West Indies & USA 2024 match between West Indies and Afghanistan at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on June 17, 2024 in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia.

West Indies took 36 runs in an over from Azmatullah Omarzai during the last group-stage fixture of the T20 World Cup against Afghanistan today (June 17).

After dismissing Brandon King for seven runs off six balls in the second over, Azmatullah Omarzai returned to bowl the fourth over of the day.

The first ball flew off Nicholas Pooran’s outside edge over deep third for a six. Omarzai overstepped the next ball as Pooran pulled it for a four over deep mid-wicket. The next ball flew way above the wicketkeeper for five wides – and the free hit stayed. The extra delivery didn’t hurt, for Omarzai nailed a yorker, bowling a dot.

Off the next three deliveries, four leg byes, followed by two consecutive sixes by Pooran, meant West Indies got the full monty.

As a result, for the fifth time, 36 runs came in an over in T20Is. The most recent one to register this unwanted record was Omarzai's teammate Karim Janat in a T20I series against India last year.

Yuvraj Singh’s iconic six sixes against Stuart Broad in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup was the first instance of a bowler going for 36 runs in a T20I. Although Omarzai conceded 32 runs as another four came off leg byes, this was the second time that many runs were leaked in an over in the tournament's history.
