Watch: West Indies scored 36 runs off Azmatullah Omarzai’s over during the 2024 T20 World Cup clash against the two sides in St Lucia.

Afghanistan and West Indies have cemented their place in the Super Eights of the competition and played their last league game on Monday night in St Lucia. Afghanistan won the toss and sent the Windies in to bat first, a decision that did not pay off as the hosts made 218-5 in their 20 overs.

West Indies got going right from the onset. They were 37-1 after three overs, but the fourth over turned the momentum towards them. Omarzai started by conceding a six to Nicholas Pooran, who slogged the fuller ball across the line over short third. The next ball saw Omarzai overstep, and to make matters worse, Pooran pulled the length ball over mid-wicket. Five wides followed as West Indies made 16 off one legal delivery.

Omarzai’s next delivery was a perfect yorker that bowled Pooran but he survived because it was a Free Hit. The last four balls also went for boundaries - four leg byes were followed by a boundary over point and two sixes over cow corner and long-off, respectively.

Pooran made 26 balls in the over, with ten additional runs from boundaries. It was the joint-most expensive over ever in men’s T20Is. Pooran ended up making 98 in 53 balls, missing his maiden T20I ton after getting run out in the 20th over courtesy of a direct hit from Omarzai.
